Scientific seminar entitled "Gill nets used in fishing for the Mullet family"
Tue. 03 Dec, 2024

Under the patronage of Prof. Osama Khalil Qaddour, Dean of the Faculty, and Prof. Mohamed Mohamed Saeed, Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, and as a continuation of the series of scientific discussion sessions moderated by Dr. Reham Hamdy Hegazy, Coordinator of Scientific Discussion Sessions at the Faculty

Today, Tuesday, 3 December 2024,

Ms. Fatma Anwar,

An Assistant Lecturer in the Fisheries Department gave a seminar entitled

Gillnet Selectivity for Keeled Mullet

The discussion session addressed one of the most important criteria for fisheries management, which is the selectivity of fishing nets for a type of fish that is commercially important and targeted by gillnet fishing, namely keeled mullet in the Gulf of Suez. The Suez Gulf fisheries are divided into two parts: the Gulf of Suez and the Suez Lagoon. Due to their varying depths and seabed characteristics, fishermen employ different nets, equipment, and fishing techniques. Gillnets are one of the most widely used and productive fishing gear in the Gulf of Suez. As a result of the failure to apply the ideal specifications for this gear, a large number of commercial species have been overexploited, leading to a decline in fish stocks in the Gulf. To address this situation, the study relied on the application of five different models to determine the selectivity of this type of net on flatfish, intending to determine the optimal mesh size to protect this economically important fish species.
