Under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Osama Qaddour, Dean of the Faculty, and Prof. Dr. Mohamed Saeed, Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, the first scientific discussion panel of the 2024-2025 academic year began, moderated by Dr. Reham Hijazi, Coordinator of Scientific Discussion Panels at the Faculty.
Dr. Hagar Siddiq Daghish gave a presentation entitled
Do substances affect the physiological state of aquatic organisms?
Does the form of substances affect the physiological state of aquatic organisms?
The session discussed the forms of substances in their usual form and in nanoform through the presentation of two research theses by her.
The first thesis addressed the effect of different levels of nano selenium extracted from spirulina algae on the growth of Vannamei shrimp and its ability to resist cadmium chloride toxicity by supporting the immune system and reducing residues in shrimp muscles. The second thesis addressed the effect of curcumin in its normal and nano forms and a mixture of the two on the reproductive performance of red tilapia fish.
The results showed that the best reproductive performance of red tilapia was when curcumin was used in its nanomaterial form, only in terms of hormone levels, histological composition of the gonads, and gene expression of steroid hormones.
Finally, it was recommended that selenium extracted from natural sources be used as it is safer and more effective, and that the decision to use the substance in nanoform depends on a compositional survey of the materials to identify the active compounds and thus facilitate the targeting of the converted substance to the closest target for the action and effectiveness of these compounds.
