Ph.D. Thesis:
Nowadays, photochromic fibers and films are turned towards the development of intelligent “smart” materials which are applied to evaluate, signalize and react to a change in color and absorbance spectra. The fiber functionalization is an operation very recent but already used in industry. The interest is obvious for the regional textile, in particular in the case of the woven products. This subject of research relates to the fiber functionalization by photochromic molecules which can bring more applications to the industrial products.
The objective of this thesis is to introduce into an elastomers (polyurethane) a photochromic molecule (spiropyran) making it possible to evaluate the constraints exerted by an optical measurement (UV, visible), and to characterize chemically and physically the material obtained. The application concerned is that of bottoms and sticking application (even of certain sporting clothing intended to support recovery after violent efforts) making it possible to the medical personnel to locally measure the pressures exerted on the skin, directly on the patient (adaptation to each particular case). It is thus a question of carrying out films and fibers containing specified amount of spiropyran, and measuring their optical behavior under various constraints and modeling of their answer. In this thesis, we studied and characterized the photochromic properties of polyurethane/spiropyran films and particularly the influence of stretching of films on their photochromic activity. Also, the goal is to relate the polyurethane mechanical properties with their photochromic activities. This relation is very important and open the way for a wide range of potential applications. Of particular interest in this context are the textiles used for biomedical applications, including graduated compression stockings for preventing or treating deep vein thrombosis. Another related application is the recent development of special sport clothing for improving recovery after strong efforts.
Our work devoted also of the development of two mathematical models. The first one is a simple modeling able to describe well the photochromic activity of Tecoflex-EG100A containing SP with taking into account l' effect of film thickness, mass ratio of SP, irradiation time, and film stretching. The second modeling was carried out to simulate the relation between the polyurethane mechanical properties (mechanical stress) and the photochromic properties (influence of stretching).
Master Thesis:
The shear stress-shear rate relationship for three untreated fuel oils with variant paraffins/asphaltenes content was measured below, at and above their pour point. Viscometric measurements were conducted via Haake Coaxial Rotational Viscometer RV20. Experimental data were fitted to the appropriate non-Newtonian flow models. The influence of paraffins and asphaltenes constituents on the rheology of fuel oils has been investigated. Time dependent rheology was studied for the three fuel oils types below, at and above their pour point. In addition viscosity-temperature relationship has been determined. Modeling of the test data revealed that the designated flow models; Bingham, Casson, Hershel-Bulkley and Ostwald are more preferable to the other mathematical models for fitting the experimental data. However, they were only applicable at a limited range of temperature and shear rates. All types of fuel oils have shown thixotropic effect below at and above pour point except that paraffinic FO that showed time-independent behavior above its pour point.
The effect of FIs (flow improvers) alone or in combination with WDs (wax dispersants) on the flow properties of the three FO types has been studied. It was observed that both CFI (commercial flow improvers) and SFI (synthesized flow improver) improved the rheological behavior of the three FO types except asphaltic FO through decreasing of the viscosity to different degree particularly at lower shear rates and lower temperatures.
Viscometric measurements of two types of lube oils (paraffinic and naphthenic) with variant paraffin content have been conducted below, at and above their pour point. The flow character, fitting models, rheological behavior and viscosity-temperature relationship have been determined for the tested lube oils.
