الوصف

Solar water desalination is attracting more attention with the increasing stress of climate change. This study aims to develop a tubular solar still using two troughs to increase the device's evaporation, thermal efficiency, and decrease the device's freshwater production cost. The results of the two-trough developed device were compared to the conventional device with a single trough. The experimental work was conducted on the rooftop of the faculty of engineering building (30°N, 32.5°E), Suez University, Suez, Egypt. The developed two-trough device produced 6.83 L/m2day with daily thermal efficiency of 58.5 %. Adding the second trough increased the device productivity and efficiency by 36.1 % and 37 %, respectively. The economic analysis conducted showed a reduction in the water cost per liter by 22.3 % by adding the second trough reaching $11.78/ton. Using this modified tubular solar still with large-scale projects is expected to further reduce the water production cost. This will help in disseminating this technology, especially in arid and remote areas. Furthermore, this will allow the possibility of expanding and repeating the device to any required water quantity according to the population.
